Independent Case Study - Institution

1) How has new and digital media had an impact on ownership or control in your chosen
industry?

Overall, Lionsgate is owned by founder Frank Giuestra; I think that NDM has affected control because it has allowed Lionsgate to expand with multiple different subsidiaries and ventures e.g. Summit Entertainment. which has meant that control of the company decisions and similar has become a lot more wide spanned.  There is a lot more opinions to consider for instance from shareholders, the chairmen & women spanned across the different subsidiaries however, there is a variety of experience to help the company grow with NDM developments. For example, a shareholder in Lionsgate is John C. Malone who was a chief executive at Tele - Communications a cable and media giant for 24 years which gives a lot of experience to Lionsgate with his understanding of the media industry.

2) What impact has new and digital media had on ownership in your chosen case study?

NDM has affected ownership as some directors choose not to sell the rights of their films to the likes of Lionsgate. They instead choose to exclusively release their films on platforms such as Netflix and LoveFilm. For example, Netflix signed a four-movie deal with Adam Sandler releasing four of his films created through his 'Happy Madison Productions' exclusively on Netflix. For example, “The Ridiculous 6”.

3) How has new and digital media changed the way institutions produce texts?

NDM has changed the way Lionsgate produces their texts because they are no longer just tailored to suit the cinema screen with a simple finish to the film with the credits. Content is also tailored to suit the online medium. For example, when the credits are shown at the end of the film the film's social media pages are also advertised. This allows audiences to interact with one another and share their experiences of the films; therefore benefitting the studios because people will share, retweet etc and this could encourage others to go and see the film that may not have usually considered it.

Example - Social media pages advertised at the end of the trailer

4) How has new and digital media changed the way institutions distribute their product?

NDM has changed distribution as it has changed the way in which a film's advertising is done. Institutions use the likes of social media a lot more to spread the news of the film release; encouraging people to see the film at the cinema by showing exclusive snippets of BTS (Behind the Scenes), cast interviews and sometimes institutions will even sell merchandise for the film online or run competitions to attend the film premiere. For example, the upcoming 'Fate of the Furious' ran/is running a competition to win tickets to the premiere where they can meet the film stars (e.g. below). Having such incentives not only encourages fans to go see the film it also encourages them to retweet, share etc on social media, therefore, interesting a wider audience.

5) How might new and digital media threaten your chosen industry?

NDM could threaten my chosen industry looking into film viewing and distribution as it brings a simpler, cheaper and more adaptable way for people to enjoy films, in the form of VoD services such as Netflix. Content on Netflix is cheaper to access than going to the cinema; For an average family (2 adults, 2 kids) tickets would cost £33.56 in total which equates to 4 months worth of a Netflix subscription. However, the VUE cinema CEO said "We aim to cater for all our customers even those who may be a bit more price sensitive", but that doesn't seem so true with the figures I've presented. For Lionsgate specifically, NDM threatens them because they are simply not as big as the likes of institutions like Netflix and have difficulties when it comes to competing on price amongst other things. Lionsgate is called  'the 'mini major'  Lionsgate' after all.

6) How has new and digital media changed the way your chosen industry is regulated?

NDM has changed regulation greatly; it has brought a more open platform. The likes of Netflix is regulated by terms and conditions but the viewing is more open. At the cinema, you have staff checking ID's relevant to the film rating that people are trying to see but at home, on the likes of Netflix you don't have this, the age rating isn't as heavily considered.
